Qualifications Matter. But They Don’t Tell the Whole Story.
When choosing a coach, therapist, hypnotherapist, educator, or other professional, qualifications are often one of the first things we look for.
They’re important.
They demonstrate commitment to learning and provide confidence that someone has undertaken formal education.
Yet qualifications alone rarely explain why one practitioner creates exceptional outcomes while another, with similar credentials, does not.
The missing ingredient is competency.
Information and Competency Are Different
Education provides knowledge.
Competency is demonstrated through application.
It’s the difference between understanding a process and knowing how to adapt that process to the person sitting in front of you.
Real competency is reflected through qualities such as:
- observation
- judgement
- timing
- responsiveness
- adaptability
- presence
These qualities influence every interaction, yet they rarely appear on a certificate.
Competency Continues to Develop
One of the misconceptions about professional education is that competency is achieved the moment a qualification is awarded.
In reality, that is often where competency development accelerates.
Every client.
Every conversation.
Every challenge.
Every success.
Every mistake.
Each contributes to the gradual refinement of professional judgement.
The practitioners who continue to grow are rarely those who believe they have arrived.
They remain curious.
Reflective.
Committed to learning.
Choosing a Practitioner
For those seeking support, qualifications should absolutely form part of the decision-making process.
However, they don’t need to be the only consideration.
Questions such as these can be equally valuable:
Do I feel listened to?
Does this person adapt to me?
Do I trust their communication?
Do I feel understood?
Do I leave our conversations feeling clearer and more hopeful?
These qualities often provide insight into competency that credentials alone cannot.
Becoming a Practitioner
For professionals, this distinction is equally important.
Learning doesn’t stop when a course ends.
It deepens through application.
Competency grows through experience, reflection, supervision, feedback, and continual refinement.
Professional development is less about accumulating certificates and more about developing the ability to think critically, respond effectively, and serve people well.
A Different Way of Thinking
Perhaps competency isn’t something we possess.
Perhaps it’s something we continually cultivate.
That shift in perspective changes the way we choose practitioners.
It changes the way we develop professionally.
And it changes the way we think about learning itself.
Because ultimately, people don’t experience what we know.
They experience how we apply it.
